The investment fund of Spanish-speaking investment firm Sociedad Investição da Trabajadores de España (SPET) is planning to buy a controlling stake in the country’s biggest daily newspaper, The Local reports.
The investment fund has been working with Spanish newspaper El País (TOL), which publishes a newspaper that covers local affairs, to acquire a controlling share of the newspaper’s circulation, according to The Local.SPET has previously bought stakes in newspapers owned by Spanish media conglomerate Estudiantes de Cine Espanol (EECO), and several newspapers of the daily La Vanguardia, the newspaper of the regional government in the central region of Cordoba, according ToEl País.
El Paí, however, has not yet announced plans to purchase the newspaper.
SPET has already invested in a number of Spanish daily newspapers, including El Pais, El Mundo, El Nacional, and El País, according TOEl Pais.
El Nacíional, which owns a majority stake in El PaÍs, was founded in 1997, according El Mundos.
Estudiante de Cines Espanols is a state-owned company that owns approximately 80 percent of El Paiós circulation.
In 2017, SPET and the Spanish newspaper bought a minority stake in Estudiente de Comercio y Comunidades (ECC), the state-run newspaper owned by the state of Madrid.
